Just Write, Numbskull

“Becoming a writer is like taking a stranger into your life. You don’t know where it will lead you. You are entering into a new relationship when you become a writer: a new relationship with yourself. You will learn a great deal about yourself and about the world. You will learn to feel things more acutely and yet you will be detached from them in a curious way. You will never watch a movie or read a novel in the same way again. The journey will be rewarding but not in the way you think. If religions are about making sense of the world, then writing is one of the great world religions. It leads to great spiritual development. You don’t need to shave your head, jump about in yellow robes or take a vow of chastity. You only have to commit to one thing: being honest on the page. Look around and record what you see.”
